George 'Spanky' McFarland (actor)
Articles: "Chicago Tribune" (USA), 3 August 1995, Iss. Tempo, pg. Cover, by: 'Gary Houston' (qv), "The return of Spanky and the Duke: The video release of 2 classics brings back some childhood memories"
Child actor, the fat boy of the "Our Gang" short film comedies., Spanky's famous double and triple-takes were taught to him by 'Stan Laurel' (qv), while a lot of his mannerisms (rolling of eyes, hands on hips, and his trademark exasperated expression) were inspired by 'Oliver Hardy' (qv)., Spanky's real-life nickname as a child was "Sonny.", Got the nickname Spanky when he was misbehaving on the Hal Roach lot during his first days there. His mother took him aside and threatened to punish him, saying, "Spanky, spanky; mustn't touch." Studio dialogue writer/editorial department head 'H.M. Walker' (qv) overheard Mrs. McFarland using this phrase, and he had the youngster dubbed "Spanky.", In real life was a rival of Our Gang/Little Rascals co-star (and on-screen pal) 'Carl 'Alfalfa' Switzer' (qv), as the two were constantly pitted against each other in rivalry bouts for star status, billing, and salaries instigated by their fathers., His son is Emmett Vogan McFarland., From 1955 to 1960, he created and hosted his own daily kids TV wraparound show, "The Spanky Show," which aired on KOTV (The Tulsa, Oklahoma affilliate of The CBS TV Network). Set against the backdrop of a makeshift kids' clubhouse, Spanky entertained and informed his studio audiences and the viewers at home with games, stories, craftmaking, hobbies, comedy skits, informational segments, and interviews with guest performers, personalities, and the kids in the studio audience in between the re-runs of "The Little Rascals" film comedies., Was an executive with Philco (later Philco Ford) for many years., Was an ardent golfer who, in his later years, could be frequently seen on the pro-am circuit., Was the only Our Ganger to ever receive on-screen and poster billing. He received on-screen billing in _Choo-Choo! (1932)_ (qv) and _The Pooch (1932)_ (qv), and most Our Gang posters during the mid-1930s were billed: "Our Gang, featuring 'Spanky' McFarland, in...", So far he is one of the only two members of "Our Gang"/"The Little Rascals" to be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,(co-star Jackie Cooper being the other one of the two). His star is located in front of the Labrea Plaza strip mall, at 7095 Hollywood Blvd on the North side of Hollywood Blvd, between the two closest cross streets of N. Labrea Ave and El Cerrito Place and his star is near the stars belonging to Actor Efrem Zimbalist Jr and composer Irving Berlin., Although his name has sometimes been misspelled in older credits as "McFarlane", George is not related to the creator of the TV show "Family Guy", who uses that particular spelling of his last name.
Death Notes: Grapevine, Texas, USA (heart attack)
Quotes: [On his years near the Little Rascals] "I wouldn't bring a million dollars bordered by favour of the consistency...and I wouldn't take a penny to brand it again. As a kid I clasp everything I needed, we had a admirable existence but when it be done....it was over."
Birth Notes: Dallas, Texas, USA

Brother of George 'Spanky' McFarland.
Death Date: 21 May 1982
Birth Date: 12 November 1930

Carl 'Alfalfa' Switzer (actor)
Was Alfalfa in the "Our Gang" comedies., Shot to death in an argument in Mission Hills, California., Died by gunshot wound by an acquaintance in an argument over $50 which Switzer felt the acquaintance owed him. The acquaintance pleaded self-defense, and the judge ruled the death "justifiable homicide." [Source: "The Hollywood Death Book," James Robert Parish, 1992.], Buried at Hollywood Memorial Park (now Hollywood Forever), 6000 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles, California., Many sources have stated that the image of a dog displayed on his tombstone refers to the hound from the Little Rascals series. This is not, in fact, correct; rather, the image references work as a professional breeder., Although one of the most popular members of "Our Gang," Switzer's later life became an almost textbook example of the former child star whose life takes a turn for the worse. Numerous brushes with the law, a broken marriage, and grade-Z film work (when he could get it) all led up to his sudden, violent death in January 1959 at the age of only 31. A similar fate befell his brother, actor 'Harold Switzer' (qv), who, nine years later, killed his girlfriend and (a few hours after that) himself., For all his problems, Switzer did have notable success as an adult as a highly regarded hunting guide, whose regular clientele included 'Roy Rogers (I)' (qv) and 'James Stewart (I)' (qv)., His father was often engaged in power struggles with 'George 'Spanky' McFarland''s father (over billing, screen time, star status, etc.). The boys, however, managed to get along fine with one another., His best friend in the "Our Gang" cast was 'Tommy Bond (I)' (qv), who played his on-screen nemesis Butch., Was a "problem child" during his tenure in "Our Gang." Switzer was known for staging pranks on both the crew and his fellow child actors (including his on-screen girlfriend 'Darla Hood' (qv), who in real life was apprehensive of Switzer)., Distant cousin of 'David Switzer (I)' (qv)., Got into an argument with the director and urinated on the studio light and shut down production till the smoke and smell of it cleared., He and his brother 'Harold Switzer' (qv) decided to audition for Our Gang but could not gain access into the studio. They went to the Our Gang Cafe and began singing and were quickly signed into _Beginner's Luck (1935)_ (qv)., His father and brother were buried next to him., Died the same day as 'Cecil B. DeMille' (qv)., In _White Christmas (1954)_ (qv), the photo that 'Vera-Ellen' (qv) shows to 'Bing Crosby' (qv) and 'Danny Kaye' (qv) of her brother Bennie is actually a photo of Switzer., Despite his trademark off-key singing, in real life he was a very skilled singer., He had three older siblings, 'Harold Switzer' (qv), Janice "Genness" Genevieve and a brother who died during childhood., His marriage lasted four months and produced a son. His family has always kept his son's name secret., In addition to acting, he worked as a bartender, dog trainer and fishing and hunting guide.
Trademarks: Off-key singing of popular (usually Bing Crosby) songs, Artificially straightened cowlick
Nick Names: Alfie, Alfadoofus
Death Notes: Mission Hills, California, USA (homicide)
Birth Notes: Paris, Illinois, USA
Other Works: He also made an appearance in the Christmas movie, "It's a Wonderful Life", opening up the gymnasium floor with the pool underneath, causing George and Mary to fall in.
Birth Name: Switzer, Carl Dean
Spouse: 'Dian Collingwood' (1954 - 1954) (divorced); 1 child
Death Date: 21 January 1959
Birth Date: 7 August 1927
